Premium Hiking Trail

Linz Basalt Loop

A path on the traces of the Linz basalt history

This romantic, varied and exciting premium hiking trail inspires on approx. 12 km as a path of silence and tranquility, far away from the noise and hustle and bustle of everyday life. In small valleys and gorges, a gently babbling brook makes its way through the beautiful landscape. The mighty crowns of the deciduous trees glitter in the interplay of light.

Follow this special path through dense forests, past small ponds and across open, wide meadows and fields. Again and again you will be presented with exciting views over the romantic Rhine valley. Historical buildings and relicts, natural special features such as the Black Lake, basalt sculptures and quarries along the way bear witness to Linz's impressive basalt history. Signposts and information boards as well as cultural facilities such as the Dattenberg Village Museum make cultural history come alive and tangible.

The start of the Linz Basalt Loop is the high plateau "Kaiserberg". Here, a spectacular view over the Rhine and Ahr valleys reveals itself to you. The perfect place to rest and take a deep breath. There are plenty of free parking spaces available at the Kaiserberg. After a while, the small farm shop of the "Hof Ronig" farm will tempt you with regional delicacies from its own production.

The Schmitz family works and lives with three generations on the Dattenberg farm "Hof Ronig". The traditional farm has been managed by the Schmitz family for 7 generations. In the small attached farm shop you can buy eggs, meat, milk, fruit, vegetables, potatoes, herbs and honey from their own production. A variety of different products from the region, from other farms complements the offer. Among them e.g. different jams, bread mixtures, liqueurs, wines, mustard and much more. See for yourself how the animals are kept in a manner appropriate to their species and enjoy some delicious regional food.

The final highlight of the trail is the historic old town of Linz at the Rhine. Let yourself be spoiled by the numerous Linz restaurateurs during your stay. Whether regional specialities or international cuisine, the choice is yours. Especially on sunny days, the cosy cafés, ice cream parlours and restaurants on the historic squares or on the banks of the Rhine invite you to linger, sunbathe and enjoy.
