Carnival in Linz
"Loss mer fiere" - with Rhenish cheerfulness through the foolish season
Linz is one of the strongholds of the Rhenish carnival. Carnival has been loved and lived in Linz for almost 200 years. In 1860 the first carnival society was founded. In 1879 the first Rose Monday procession took place. Today, eight carnival clubs belong to the Große Linzer Karnevalsgesellschaft, which was founded in 1934.
From Weiberfastnacht (heavy Thursday) to Rosenmontag have "Prince Carnival and his jeckes Volk" firmly in power.
During the storming of the town hall, the carnies take power over the town hall for the coming foolish days after a heated battle of words. At the various meetings, balls and Carnival parties are celebrated vigorously and the Rhenish cheerfulness is lived in its most beautiful form. The carnival season culminates in the big, colourful Rose Monday parade through the historic old town.
